What’s On Under The Street

The Word Under The Street is back this year with several fantastic local alternative comic book artists and illustrated zine producers! Several exhibitors will be found in The Word Under The Street marketplace downstairs in the Library’s Alice MacKay Room this Sunday. In addition to these fabulous exhibitors, you will also find some wonderful interactive activities.

If you are an aspiring comic artist that would love feedback from a mentor, here’s your chance! Twelve experienced comic artists will provide you with undivided attention, advice and affirmation. Be sure to bring your work and sign up early at The Word Under The Street because the 24 spaces will fill up fast! The following Comic Consultants will be offering two 15-minute critiques each:

12:00 — Jeff Ellis, Tara C. Carmichael
12:30 — Carina Piccioni, Kim Glennie
1:00 — Steve Rolston, James Lloyd
1:30 — Mary Karaplis, Sydney More
2:00 — Leonard S. Wong, Jenna Sokalski
2:30 — Jonathon Dalton, Jesse Davidge

Robin Thompson

Also at The Word Under The Street, join instructor, comic book artist, self-publisher and freelancing artist Robin Thompson from 2:00-3:00 for his hands-on Cartooning Workshop. You’ll learn how to create awesome characters and design your own comic strip! This workshop is perfect for ages 11-16, but class is limited to 20 participants so be sure to sign up early!

More great programming, including panels and workshops, will take place Under The Street in Word Talks (Alma Van Dusen Room) and Writing Talks (Peter Kaye Room).

CanZine West 2010

CanZine, Canada’s Largest Zine Fair and Festival of Alternative Culture is coming to Vancouver! Join them on Saturday, October 16th, 2010 from 1-7pm at W2 Storyeum (151 West Cordova Street). $5 at the door, includes a copy of the fall issue of Broken Pencil.

Over 150 zines from across Canada will be on display and for sale! The heart of the event, indie publishers both in print and online come from across the country and the continent to show their wares! Be amazed at the creativity, ingenuity, and sheer weirdness!
