BOARD CONTROL: AN EXHIBITION OF SKATEBOARD DECKS
Skateboarding has a broad scope, including art, design, and culture. Focusing on the aesthetics skateboarding, this display lays to rest whatever misconception outsiders might have attached to skateboarding. It aims to introduces people to what is really happening today.
Color Magazine is the coming together of people who find joy in skateboarding, and the culture that surrounds it. Color will also be screening skateboarding videos created in conjunction with fourcorner publishing, which regularly presents multimedia entertainment.
Curated by Sandro Grison. Featuring Andy Jenkins, Ben Horton, Chris Johanson, Dennis McNett, Don Pendleton, Evan Hecox, FOS, Hershel Baltrotsky, Michael Leon, Nathan Matthews, Pete Panciera, Shawn Barber, Todd Bratrud + over 50 more artists from brands like Kitsch, Girl, Stacks, Slave, Krooked, Baker, Roger and Enjoi.

This is a book trailer for Jack Whyte‘s new book, The Forest Laird: The Tale Of William Wallace. It’s the first in a new trilogy and the trailer is narrated by Jack himself.

Great article from The Georgia Straight went online today (hopefully in-print tomorrow) featuring quotes from Jen Currin and Jenn Farrell. My favourite quote is from Jen Currin as she described the festival for visitors:
“People come and listen to half a poem and then walk away. It’s not personal—it’s just part of the whole feel of the day. It’s like a buffet. You’re taking in a little here, a little there.”

We’re so excited that the renovations at CBC are complete. The festival has been quiet on Hamilton Street in previous years and we’re so happy the CBC is planning lots of activities to coincide with The Word On The Street Vancouver and Culture Days! Check out all this great stuff:

Aboriginal Carvers on the CBC Plaza
Richard Krentz and Nelson Leon will be setting up a carving exhibit from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. There will also be a talk and song around the carving at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 pm.
The Word on the Street Vancouver festival is organizing a performance piece for Sunday, September 26, 2010 and need volunteer performers from 12:30 to 2:00.
As a volunteer, we can provide a letter of reference and/or confirm volunteer hours for graduation. You will also receive an official Word On The Street Vancouver t-shirt and be entered in a contest to win a library of Word On The Street books.

We’re happy to announce our website is fully updated with the festival programming and the program guides have been headed out into the world.
Last week we received over 12,000 programs, 20,000 bookmarks, and several thousand posters. Keep your eyes peeled in cafes, bookstores, and libraries throughout the Lower Mainland. Also, there are Transit Shelter ads around the city and displays in select Book Warehouse locations. Send us a photo if you see a particularly awesome display!

Grant will be reading/talking at The Word On The Street Vancouver 2010 in the Canada Writes Tent at 2:00 pm. If you’re looking forward to Grant Lawrence’s book, Adventures in Solitude: What Not to Wear to a Nudist Potluck and Other Stories from Desolation Sound (Harbour Publishing), you won’t want to miss his book launch party on October 7th at 7:00 pm at the Museum of Vancouver.
From Captain George Vancouver to Muriel “Curve of Time” Blanchet to Jim “Spilsbury’s Coast” Spilsbury, visitors to Desolation Sound have left behind a trail of books endowing this popular BC marine park. Young Grant’s father bought land next to the park in the 1970s, just in time to encounter the gun-toting cougar lady, left-over hippies, outlaw bikers, and an assortment of other characters. In this hilarious and captivating book, CBC personality Grant Lawrence adds a whole new chapter to the saga of this storied piece of BC coastline. Lawrence is the host of the CBC Radio 3 Podcast with Grant Lawrence, a weekly showcase of Canadian independent music.
The launch event is being sponsored by Vancouver Is Awesome, Stanley Park Brewery, and White Bear Wine. At the launch, Grant will read, talk, and sign books during a multi-media presentation. Also, Said The Whale and Jill Barber will be playing music and admission is free.

Are you a big Robert Bateman fan? Can’t wait to see him at The Word On The Street Vancouver 2010? Well, the Saturday before the festival, Robert Bateman will be signing copies of his book Bateman: New Works at Chapters Granville.

The book is an exquisite collection over 100 full-clour reproductions. It also includes an introduction and 11 short essays by Bateman in which he shares his wisdom on nature, environmentalism, education, and the role of art in the preservation of wilderness. We’re so excited and proud to have the Association of Book Publishers of BC launch the 2010 Poetry In Transit project at The Word On The Street Vancouver. We will have a reading for an hour in The Poetry Tent with a selection of poets and a bus on-site displaying the poetry cards. This year’s poets, as selected by the ABPBC, are:
