Another Wonderful Festival

October 18, 2011

The Word On The Street Vancouver was a fantastic, fun-filled festival once again this year! Attendees enjoyed a wide variety of free events, including author readings, live performances, workshops, and more.

Our expansion to three days was very successful, and some wonderful new partnerships were forged with Carnegie Centre, Banyen Books & Sound, and Historic Joy Kogawa House.

The main festival day was every bit as successful. In spite of gale force winds, the majority of programming persevered. Poets even had the wonderful opportunity of reading for their audiences aboard the Poetry in Transit bus, a more intimate alternative to the Poetry Tent. Attendees who braved the weather were rewarded with the excellent events of the day. We really appreciate everyone hanging in there and making the 2011 festival just as fabulous as ever.

We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Drama at The Word On The Street Vancouver!

September 22, 2011

Amongst the bzillions of activities and readings, check out drama and playwright readings on Sunday September 25th at The Word On The Street!

Mainstage: 2:30 Vancouver Youth Theatre—Why Justice? Vancouver Youth Theatre’s Teen Ensemble presents Why Justice?, a humourous, thought provoking and original piece written collaboratively by teen actors from BC’s Lower Mainland in partnership with VYT directors, with great music by local guitarist and singer songwriter Glenn Chatten, with Ross Fairbairn. Vancouver Youth Theatre is a non-profit society dedicated to the inspiration and education of young actors ages 5–18.

Authors Tent:
HOST : Jerry Wasserman, actor, critic, UBC theatre professor

12:00 C. E. Gatchalian (Vancouver) Presented by The Playwrights Guild of Canada
Crossing & Other Plays (Lethe Press $13.00)

‘Crossing’ explores the tormented, sexually charged relationship between a mother and her teenage son, bound together by guilt and fear over a horrific incident ten years prior. ‘Diamond’ is an elliptical, meta-theatrical dissection of one woman’s intimate story. ‘Ticks’ is the frantic, metronomeaccompanied monologue of a self-appointed, disease-stricken messiah, eager to bring a plague upon the city. C. E. Gatchalian is the author of three books of drama and one book of poetry. His plays have appeared on stages nationally and internationally, as well as on radio and television.

12:20 Lucia Frangione (Vancouver) Presented by The Playwrights Guild of Canada
Paradise Garden (Talonbooks $17.95)

Day lives with his mother in their historic family estate, shared with their new Turkish neighbours, the Zekis. While Day would prefer to avoid a longburied family secret, their neglected but luxurious garden reminds Layla Zeki of the Paradise Garden of Judeo-Christian / Islamic tradition. As love blossoms between Layla and Day, they struggle to find their similarities and understand their differences. Lucia Frangione is a young post-feminist voice in Canada’s independent theatre scene. She is the two-time recipient of the Gordon Armstrong Playwright Award and in 2001 won the Sydney Risk playwright award for Cariboo Magi.

12:40 TJ Dawe (Vancouver)
Labrador (Brindle & Glass $12.95)

Labrador is about a part of the world that practically no one knows anything about—Canada’s own Siberia. It’s also about the cycle of generations, how the hell bread got invented, the blurry line between fact and fiction, why schedule needs to be pronounced with a k sound, and how aliens and archaeologists are the same. TJ Dawe has written and performed eleven solo shows and participated in more than eighty theatre and comedy festivals. He was named the 2004 Touring Artist of the Year by the BC and Alberta Arts Council and his plays have been produced in Canada, the US and overseas.

Historic Joy Kogawa House announces 2011 Writing for Social Change readings series

On Thursday, September 15, Historic Joy Kogawa House will welcome Toronto author Susan Crean as 2011 writer-in-residence. (As part of The Word On The Street Vancouver, meet Susan Friday night, September 23, at Historic Joy Kogawa House. And make a collage button with Laura Bucci at the same time!)

Susan Crean is a lifelong non-fiction author and journalist who will live at Historic Joy Kogawa House while working on a major new book of literary non-fiction that combines memoir, history, and social comment to tell the story, in part, of head-tax payer, Wong Dong Wong, who came to Canada in 1911. Crean will live and work at the house for three months while creating this new work. During this period, she will offer local writers and readers a number of opportunities to meet with her as an author in one-on-one consultations.

Crean will also engage in a series of conversations during her residency with writers who use their work as a means of social change. Writers in this series include the following:

– poet Evelyn Lau, in conversation Sunday, October 2

– journalist Eric Enno Tamm, Sunday, October 16

– playwright Tara Beagan, Sunday, October 30

– essayist Betsy Warland, Sunday, November 5

– writer Wayde Compton, Sunday, November 27

– artist Shirley Bear, Sunday, December 4

Crean will also lead writing workshops from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, and Saturday, November 19, and she will participate in a craft sale and open house event with other local writers from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 11.

Crean is an accomplished teacher and editor and her ability to work with other writers distinguished her application from others received in a cross-Canada call for proposals. Among the applicants received, Susan Crean was judged the most skilled writer and the applicant with the most clarity around the public programs to be presented. Crean lives in Toronto, Ontario, but will live and work at Historic Joy Kogawa House throughout her residency, from September 15 to December 15, 2011.
